Something hit him hard in the shoulder, but still he kept running. He then felt something hit him in the leg. He stumbled but continued running. ” Then, within seconds, the entire world went black. A cloud of thick smoke enveloped him and he found himself in total darkness. Bob stopped running. He couldn’t see and he couldn’t breathe. His shoulder throbbed with pain and his leg hurt. He stood still. He stood there forever, maybe a minute or two, then put out his hand. He touched a fire truck, less than a yard away, but he still couldn’t even see it.

When they started going out, Ginger and Jim did not seem to have a lot in common. Jim, who was born in Baltimore but grew up in Florida, was working for a small law firm. He loved New York. Ginger, who had an electrical engineering degree from Rutgers and was taking night courses at New York University, still lived with her parents in New Jersey while working at Bell Labs. She was not all that fond of the city. Jim liked baseball and had season tickets to the Yankees, but Ginger did not care much for the game; Jim liked the ballet, while Ginger preferred the opera.

He went everywhere, walking the streets, going to museums, and looking at the skyscrapers. Years later, after he had become blind, Omar often amazed people by describing pictures he had seen in museums and the architectural detail on certain buildings. Omar returned to Colombia and finished his degree in engineering. He also married Sonia, his high school sweetheart, and their first two daughters — Elizeth and Andrea Catalina — were born. Omar was working on a hydroelectric project on a river in the Colombian jungle, his first job as a civil engineer, when his eyes began to fail.
