Finding none of the books acceptable, we decided to find a means by which to develop a book on tribal governments. Shortly thereafter, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) renewed its interest in producing a book on tribal governments that could be used by senior high schools, colleges, tribal officials, and the general public. Later that same year the NCAI received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation to underwrite the cost of research, and I was formally asked to write the bookto work, in effect, as a translator of information for the tribes that had agreed to participate in the project.
Education Educational development has been a high priority among the Choctaws for the last twenty years. In 1963 the longawaited high school was completed. Currently the Choctaw school system serves more than eleven hundred students in grades kindergarten through twelve. In addition to a basic primary and secondary school curriculum the tribe has designed programs to meet the educational needs of all its members. For instance, a preschool program helps prepare youngsters from age three through five for primary school.
