If you have the strength you still keep on arm-over-arming. If not, revert to the weightlifter’s stance – straight arms, straight back – and use your knees to do the last few pulls to safely get the gennaker tucked away with the head of the sail just disappearing at the end of the final pull. Just as with the hoist, keeping the boat upright, keeping it stable, is all down to the helm. Chances are that you won’t need to change direction that much during the drop, because you’ll have already been sailing fairly deep anyway, but really all you’re doing is looking to keep the mast dead upright, above the boat, making it as easy as possible for the crew just to focus on getting the gennaker safely stowed.

The benefit of this is that you are unlikely to let the halyard re-cleat on the way down. You’ll find the drop a lot easier than the hoist, because gravity’s doing a lot of the work for you so you’ll find the first bit of the drop very easy and as soon as the crew starts this first piece of the drop, if the helm is still holding the sheet, they should release at this point and then, as the first retrieval patch comes round the forestay and goes into the mouth of the chute, this is when it gets harder.

Rick Perkins: Dropping kites in skiffs If you’re late starting your drop, you’ll be sailing past the mark on a run, whilst your competitors are sailing upwind in the opposite direction on a beat. Overshooting the leeward mark because you’ve started your drop too late is a disaster. Not only have you gone too far, you’re giving away ground as you sail away from the buoy. You’ve then got to recover that ground by sailing back upwind slowly, relative to the speed at which you went down the run. So my mantra is: ‘if in doubt, get it down early’.
